São Paulo – The United Arab Emirates are hosting a high-level meeting on climate on May 4th and 5th, which will lead up to the United Nations (UN) climate summit, due to be held in September in New York. The announcement was made by Ban Ki-moon, the UN secretary-general, and by Sultan Al Jaber, the UN special envoy for Energy and Climate Change.
The meeting, called “Abu Dhabi Ascent,” will be attended by ministers and business, finance and civil society leaders. The goal is to outline action proposals and determine how countries, businesses and organizations may become further involved in various initiatives, so that partnerships may be enhanced and lead to concrete action in the September summit.
To Ki-moon, the meeting in the Emirates will be a milepost, helping to create the necessary conditions to a successful climate summit. “I look forward to working with all leaders to ensure that the Summit catalyzes major steps on the ground and towards an ambitious global climate agreement,” said the secretary-general, as per a UN press release. Ki-moon met with Jaber last Monday (3rd) in New York.
An Emirati minister of state, Jaber said his country is at the forefront of international efforts to mitigate climate change. “As a key mitigation strategy, the UAE has made significant investments to develop and deploy clean energy technologies globally,” he said. “The high-level meeting in Abu Dhabi will be integral in encouraging and enhancing commitments from the public-private sectors and ensuring the summit in New York is a success,” said Jaber.
The New York climate Summit will take place on September 23rd. The event will focus on actions designed to prevent climate change, leading to significant economic advantages.
