São Paulo – Brazilian companies interested in participating in Djazagro, an international fair in the food sector, to take place in Algiers, between April 12th and 15th, may enrol for participation at the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce offices. Enrolment is open and should be done through the Foreign Trade Department. The exhibition covers from processed food and ingredients to equipment for production and packaging.
Brazilian participation is promoted by the Arab Brazilian Chamber in partnership with the Brazilian Foreign Office (Itamaraty). The Brazilian space should cover 96 square meters. According to the Foreign Trade analyst at the Chamber, Frederico Pucci, this is the first time that the Arab Brazilian Chamber participates in Djazagro. Up to last year, the organisation participated in Algiers International Fair, a multisectorial fair, but has now decided to focus on a sector fair.
"Algeria is a great importer of food. It is the world’s third main buyer of milk and dairy, the main food importer in Africa and is also among the world’s ten main buyers of grain,” recalled Pucci. Brazil is one of the main food suppliers to the Arab country. In January and February this year, among the main products that Brazil exported to the region were sugar, meats and milk, in that order.
In total, Brazilian exports to the Arab country generated US$ 93 million in the period, against US$ 84 million in the same months last year. What Algeria imports from the world, however, are much more than that: US$ 39.51 billion. France is the main supplier to the Arab country and answers to 16.5% of purchases, Italy comes in second, with 11%, China in third, with 10.3%, followed by Spain, with 7.4%. The main products imported were machinery, food and consumer goods.
In last year’s edition of Djazagro, 80% of the exporters were foreign. According to figures disclosed on the fair site, in 2009 it received 350 companies. They were from 18 countries.
