São Paulo – The Division for Agreements and Multilateral Cultural Affairs (DAMC) is open, until August 15, to submissions by Brazilians to the 16th edition of the UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture, organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and by the government of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. The prize is given to individuals, groups or institutions that have contributed to the spread of Arab culture via literature, arts, science or other type of intellectual work, regardless of any religious considerations.
The prize awards two individuals, groups or institutions, one from the Arab world and other from any other region. According to Itamaraty, the submissions must have a recommendation letter, in English or French, by some eminent authority in the field of the candidate, with the candidate’s resume and his/her achievements; an overview on the candidate’s work, publications and other supporting documents; and a description of the individual or group contribution regarding the prize’s goals.
The submissions will be forwarded to the prize’s organization by the Brazilian government. Each one of the two winners will receive USD 30,000. The prize has been awarded since 2001.
In the last edition (picture above), the winners of the UNESCO-Sharjah were the Asociación Civil del Creciente Cine Fértil para la Promoción de la Diversidad Cultural, from Argentina, which promotes the Arab culture in Latin America; and Lebanese woman Christine Tohme, cultural organizer, curator and founder of The Lebanese Association for Plastic Arts, Ashkal Alwan, which supports and facilitates the production and dissemination of intellectual and creative initiatives in different fields and platforms.
The submissions must be sent to DAMC’s email at damc@itamaraty.gov.br
