São Paulo – The European Union has shown interest in striking a partnership with Egypt to turn the African nation in a local energy hub, said the country’s minister of Petroleum, Tarek Al-Mulla (pictured above), in a speech at the Sustainable Energy Forum held in Cairo, as reported by the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).
On Monday (23), Egypt and the European Union signed a memorandum of understanding for a new strategic cooperation in the energy sector.
The EU’s Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Arias Canete, said that Egypt has great potential to become a regional energy hub. The European bloc, in turn, is interested in offering financial and technical support, as well as expertise and technology transfer.
According to the Egyptian minister, the country has been taking “serious steps” to become a regional gas, energy and oil center. Al-Mulla said that the European Union is “an important strategic partner” to Egypt and has always supported the country when needed.
