São Paulo – On September 13th, Campinas Colleges (Facamp) promoted event 1st International Dialogues – Edward Said and the Middle East. The talk should take place at the institution’s auditorium, from 12:30pm to 3:00 pm.
The invited speakers are professors João Quartin de Morais and Paulo Farah. Morais is a volunteer professor at Campinas University (Unicamp), a former professor at the University of São Paulo (USP) and at Universitè de Paris. Farah is an undergraduate and graduate professor at USP and the director of the Library and Centre of South American and Arab Research (Bibliaspa).
Apart from the debate, two films will also be presented: interview " Selves And Others: A Portrait Of Edward Said" and documentary "Campo da Paz" (Field of Peace), which shows the football played by Palestinian children. The event is organized by the Coordinator of the Studies and Arab Research Nucleus at Facamp, Ali El Khatib.
Edward Said was an important Palestinian intellectual. Graduated in English literature, he taught at Columbia University, in the United States. A militant of the Palestinian cause, he wrote several books. His most famous work, “Orientalism”, dealt with the construction of a distorted image of the East, created from reports by Western researchers and explorers.
