São Paulo – The film “The Swimmers” will be screened this Saturday (6), at 4:00 pm, at Esporte Clube Sírio’s Palmira room, in the city of São Paulo. The plot brings the real story of the young swimming sisters Yusra and Sara Mardini, who fled the war in Syria. Admission is free for club members and guests.
The production addresses emotional moments in their lives, such as when Yusra, due to the bombings caused by the civil war in the country in 2015, witnessed the destruction of the Olympic center where she competed. The young woman moves to Europe with her sister on a path full of challenges; later, they are discovered by a coach.
The sisters were in Brazil for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, competing in the 100-meter freestyle and 100-meter butterfly categories. They currently live in Germany. The film depicts the athletes’ dedication and the sport’s transforming power. It is directed by Welsh-Egyptian filmmaker Sally El Hosaini.
The film will be exhibited through the Arab Culture Nucleus of Esporte Clube Sírio. The club was founded by young Syrian and Lebanese immigrants in 1917 and offers leisure, culture, and sports activities. It also promotes preserving and disseminating Arab culture, traditions, customs, and hospitality in Brazil.
