São Paulo – Fluminense, a Brazilian Rio de Janeiro-based club, beat the Egyptian Cairo-based Al Ahly 2-0 in the 2023 Club World Cup semifinal in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi city hosts the competition promoted by the International Football Federation (FIFA) from December 12 to 22. The match against the Egyptians was Fluminense’s first on Saudi soil, at the King Abdullah Stadium.
Led by coach Fernando Diniz, the Rio team earned a spot in the tournament in early November after winning the continental championship, South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) Copa Libertadores. Al Ahly qualified for the Club World Cup after winning the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League.
With the win, Fluminense advances to the Club World Cup final to face off against the other semifinal winner – England’s Manchester City or Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds. The match will occur this Tuesday (19) at 9:00 pm AST. The final will take place on Friday (22), also at 9:00 pm AST.
