Rio de Janeiro – A 6.4% increase in processed food output was the main factor driving up the Brazilian industry performance by 0.5% from August to September of this year. According to the Monthly Survey of Industry released this Tuesday (1) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the extraction and motor vehicle industries also posted significant growth with 2.6% and 4.8%, respectively.
According to André Macedo, a researcher at IBGE, despite the average growth of 0.5%, only nine out of 24 sectors surveyed registered positive results from August to September. “This month’s result, despite being positive, is concentrated in a few industrial sectors, such as foodstuffs, extraction and motor vehicles, which besides registering a more significant expansion this month, also are sectors that carry relevant weight within the industrial structure,” he said.
