São Paulo – Food production in Syria this year remains 40% below the pre-crisis levels, according to data released this Thursday (23rd) by the World Food Programme (WFP). The price of bread increased 87%, according to the United Nations organization, which warned for the irreversible risk of hunger, especially among children.
“The evidence is clear: almost five years of conflict destroyed the Syrian economy and the ability of people to buy something as essential as food to be able to survive”, said WFP’s chief economist, Arif Husain. Around 9.8 million people in Syria live under food insecurity, with 6.8 million of these in distress.
