São Paulo – Foreign tourists spent US$ 4.4 billion in Brazil from January to August, 15.6% more than in the same period of last year, according to figures disclosed by the Ministry of Tourism. In August alone, spending hit US$ 605 million, 23.8% more than in the same month of 2010.
Total spending by Brazilians abroad, however, was much higher: US$ 14.2 billion from January to August. The resulting travel account deficit is US$ 9.8 billion, as against US$ 6 billion during the same period of last year.
