São Paulo – Sudan is one of the African countries with the most land in the hands of foreigners, according to a study of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Agricultural Development Fund (Fida), according to the news agency Panapress.
In addition to Sudan, the list includes Ghana, Ethiopia, Madagascar and Mali. The five countries have a combined 2.5 million hectares on lease to foreign investors for farming. In Sudan, 1.5 million hectares of farming land are leased, usually for a 99-year period, to the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and South Korea.
Sudan is located in North Africa and produces a host of agricultural products, such as sugarcane for ethanol and sugar manufacturing, cotton, nuts, wheat, sorghum and maize, among others. Approximately 80% of the country’s labour force is involved in agriculture.
