São Paulo – The Center for Arab and Islamic Studies (Centro de Estudos Árabes e Islâmicos – CEAI) of the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS) will offer a free online course in literary translation from Arabic into Portuguese. The classes will take place on January 26 and 28 and on February 2, 4, 9 and 11. Seats are limited and enrolment is available on the UFS website.
Entitled “Translation as a Reading of the other,” the course will comprise six two-hour classes. Even though professionals specializing in other languages – including French –will be involved, special emphasis will be placed on the Arabic language.
The discussions will delve into ethical, cultural and philosophical aspects. “This course was born of the ascertainment of a need. Graduate students expressed an interest in a discussion of non-technical aspects of translation,” CEAI coordinator Geraldo Adriano Godoy de Campos told ANBA. According to him, the lessons will provide a broader notion of the very idea of translation.

The course is intended for professionals and students as well as people with no knowledge of other languages. “It’s a free course that’s open to anyone, anywhere in the country. There are no prerequisites. It’s meant for people interested in discussing and learning about the topic. Seasoned Brazilian translators will discuss translation from Arabic into Portuguese,” de Campos said.
The course will feature professors associated with the CEAI, except for the keynote speaker, Mamede Jarouche, PhD, of the University of São Paulo (USP), who first translated the Book of One Thousand and One Nights directly from Arabic manuscripts into Brazilian Portuguese.
UFS professors Wellington Costa, of the Department of Languages, who translated Jean Cocteau’s work from French into Portuguese; Ahmed Hussein el Zoghbi, a CEAI researcher currently pursuing a doctorate degree in Philosophy, whose master’s dissertation was a translation of tales by Palestine’s Ghassan Kanafani from Arabic into Portuguese; and de Campos, who’s a professor at the UFS’ Department of International Relations.
Classes will also be taught by professionals from other universities, including Felipe Benjamin, PhD, of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Benjamin is a research associate with the USP’s “Tarjama – School of translators of modern Arabic literature,” and a translator for publishing house Editora Tabla.
