São Paulo – The United Arab Emirates and France announced the creation of a USD 100 million fund for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) with the goal to protect cultural heritage within conflict areas, according to information published this Friday (2) by the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).
“Today, we establish a USD 100 million fund to focus on protecting and rebuilding these sites, and build a system of protecting them for future generations,” said the chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, Mohammed Khalifa Al-Mubarak, during a conference on the protection of cultural heritage at risk held in the UAE’s capital, according to KUNA.
“Conflict causes irreparable damage to valuable heritage sites in Syria, Iraq, Mali and many others. This necessitates work and direct coordination among UNESCO countries in this regard,” he added.
