Brasília – The federal, states and local governments in Brazil ran a primary deficit – i.e. expenditure exceeding revenue, with debt interest not factored in, of BRL 26.643 billion (USD 8.31 billion at the current exchange rate) in September, the Brazilian Central Bank reported this Monday (31). It was the worst result for a September since records started being kept in December 2001, and wider than the BRL 7.318 billion (USD 2.282 billion) deficit in September 2015.
In the nine months through September, the deficit reached BRL 85.501 billion (USD 26.668 billion), up from BRL 8.423 billion (USD 2.627 billion) in September 2015. In the 12 months through August, Brazil had a primary deficit of BRL 188.327 billion (USD 58.739 billion) – 3.08% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
