Brasília – At the request of the Libyan transition government, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisations (Nato) should remain in the region for at least one more month. The minister of Oil and Finances of the National Transitional Council, Ali Tarhuni, said on Tuesday (25) that a formal request has been placed to the command of the organisation for the mission to be maintained up to late November.
Last week, after the capture and death of dictator Muammar Gaddafi, Nato informed the intention of ending the mission in Libya on October 31st. The organisation has been operating in the region since March.
The topic should be the theme of a meeting on Wednesday (26) between the leaders of the 28 countries that are Nato members. The command of the operation in Libya was in the hands of Italy, France, Great Britain, the United States and Canada. The Nato secretary general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, said that the decision on extension of the mission should only be confirmed after inquiries to the United Nations (UN).
