Rio de Janeiro – The federal government of Brazil is planning to award concessions for 44 airports currently managed by the Brazilian Airport Infrastructure Company (Infraero) to private sector players through 2022, including Santos Dumont, in Rio de Janeiro, and Congonhas, in São Paulo. The information was made public this Monday (24) by the Brazilian minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, who attended a meeting of business leaders group Lide at Rio’s Copacabana Palace Hotel.
The minister said the government successfully tested out a block concession auction model with 12 airports last March. “The model worked out, it was well accepted, the investors came and we saw quite interesting premiums,” he said.
The next auction in October 2020 will include concessions for 22 airports in Brazil’s South, Midwest and North 1 blocks. The seventh auction round, in late 2021 or early 2022, will see another 22 North 2 and Southeast airports granted in concession, including the Santos Dumont and Congonhas airports.
