São Paulo – The Dubai-based global ports operator DP World handled 18.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) in Q3 2020, with gross container volumes up 3.1% year-on-year in Q3.
Year-to-date through September, DP World handled 52.2 million TEU, down 2.5% year-on-year, it said in a statement on Monday (26).
Gross volume growth was driven by Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas, with strong results in ports in London (UK), Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Sokhna (Egypt), Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Antwerp (Belgium).
The best-performing ports in the Americas were in Buenos Aires (Argentina), Santiago (Chile) and Vancouver (Canada). The UAE’s Jebel Ali Port handled 3.4 million TEU in Q3 2020, down 4.2% from a year ago.
“This performance is ahead of expectations and once again illustrates the resilience of the global container industry, and DP World’s continued ability to outperform the market,” chairman and CEO Ahmed Bin Sulayem was quoted as saying.
Sulayem said recovery in volumes was broad-based, with quarter-on-quarter throughput going up by almost 10% as lockdown restrictions eased around the world.
India, which had seen numbers plummet in Q2, improved significantly during Q3, while Jebel Ali (UAE) saw 3.4% growth as regionwide trade began to stabilize.
“During this challenging period, we have focused on maintaining efficient supply chains to sustain the delivery of critical and essential cargo,” Sulayem said.
