São Paulo- There is no better marketing for a pepper sauce manufacturer than being based in the Brazilian state of Bahia, which is known, among other things, for offering the hottest, most coveted versions of the spice. This is the trump card of Sabor&Cor when it comes to gaining space both in the country and abroad. Established in 2008, the company has its production unit in Barreiras, 890 kilometres away from state capital Salvador. The enterprise has a production capacity of 150,000 sauces and preserves per month, and aims to begin exporting in the first half of 2011.
According to businessman Pedro Tassi, one of the owners of Sabor&Cor, the company currently manufactures four types of sauces and five types of preserves. The menu includes items such as Molho Tipo Quente Extra Picante (Extra Spicy Hot Type Sauce), Conserva de Pimenta Malagueta (Malagueta Pepper Preserve) and Conserva de Pimenta Biquinho (Biquinho Pepper Preserve), among others. "The latest release is the Corante Natural de Urucum (Natural Urucum Dye), a replacement for annatto powder made without chemicals, using only soy oil," explains Pedro. "When it comes to sales, however, the flagship product is our Molho Sabor&Cor, Tipo Quente (Sabor&Cor Sauce, Hot Type), he says.
The businessman guarantees that the peppers produced at the São Francisco River Valley, where Barreiras is located, boast "excellent yield and are much hotter than those from other producing regions." "The geographic reference of being ‘made in Bahia’ is an important trump card for us," says Pedro.
The company’s goals for 2011 include supplying pepper pulp to the domestic and foreign markets. "Even though several export proposals have been proposed to us, we want to structure out the agriculture and manufacturing first," claims Pedro. "The exporting process is recent for us, and there is strong interest from European and North American companies. Our first sales to foreign countries should take place in the first half of 2011," he says.
What about the Arabs? "We are aware that the Arab countries are traditional trade partners of Brazil. We want to pay special attention to them in 2011," Pedro explains. "For such, we are seeking importers and distributors to be our partners in those markets."
Another change for next year is a potential association with a European enterprise. "Our investment plan for 2011 includes the injection of share capital from this European company. Negotiations to that end are at an advanced stage," says Pedro.
Presently, the Sabor&Cor’s main markets in the country are the states of Bahia and São Paulo, and actions are underway to boost sales in Paraná, Goiás, the Federal District and Rio de Janeiro.
In a way, the enterprise started being created in 1976, as Pedro’s father, Arduíno, planted one hectare of peppers out of curiosity, after a neighbour of French origin presented the family with an aged spice sauce recipe. Artisanal production came shortly thereafter, and the product was sold at free fairs and bars. Now, the company is getting ready to win over Brazil and the world under the brand Sabor&Cor. Using the unbeatable marketing of spice from Bahia, of course.
