Brasília – The discovery of a new mineral province in Brazil was announced this Wednesday (1st) by the government of the state of Mato Grosso. It is located in the municipality of Mirassol D’Oeste and comprises potassium and iron ore deposits. The mineral reserve was found by government officials seeking potassium and phosphate reserves.
The iron ore deposit is estimated to contain 11 billion tonnes, with an iron content of 41%. It is nearly four times larger than that of the Carajás deposit, which contains 3 billion tonnes of ore and is considered the largest open-air deposit in the world. The iron content at the deposit in Carajás is higher, at 67%. The phosphate deposit contains 428 million tonnes, with a content of 6%.
After the announcement, state governor Silval Barbosa claimed that he will start looking for companies that are willing to establish themselves in the Mato Grosso in order to process the ore.
