São Paulo – The Immigrant Fest will have its 23rd edition with attractions from over 50 countries, with cuisine, dance, handicraft and music of many communities, among them the Arabs. The event is organized by the Immigration Museum, a body of the Secretariat of Culture of the São Paulo State and is scheduled for June 3, 9 and 10, from 10 am to 6 pm (box office open until 5 pm), with tickets at BRL 5 (USD 1.42), half price, and BRL 10 (USD 2.83), full price.
This edition will have 49 food vendors, 29 handicraft vendors ad 46 dance and music groups, among other attractions that will take place at the historic complex that hosted, from the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, the old Brás Immigrant Lodging. The organization expects over 20,000 visitors.
From Arab countries, there will be food vendors from Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria. Representatives from Syria will also take part at the Emporium space, with products for the public to take hom, such as hummus, dry curd and baba ganoush.
Among the cultural performances, there will be a concert by Arab Productions, from Palestine, on Sunday (3), at 4:30 pm. On Saturday (9), at noon, the Bibliaspa group will perform; at 1 pm it’s the turn of Sawalef, from Morocco; and at 2:30 pm the Arab artistic and therapeutic space Malaika will be presented.
On Sunday, at 12:30 pm, a workshop of the Palestinian dance Dabke is also scheduled. Cuisine and handicraft workshops will also have the presence of Arabs. On Sunday (3), at 2 pm, there will be a class of Palestinian embroidery. On Saturday (9), at 2 pm, a class to prepare stuffed grape leaves and, at 4pm, to prepare makdous, a Palestinian dish. On Sunday (10), at 4 pm, the fest hosts a workshop from Iraq on the Art of Arabic Calligraphy.
