São Paulo – Small banana farmers from the state of Roraima, in northern Brazil, established a cooperative to use banana fibre for the production of paper. The Agricultural Cooperative for Caroebe Farmers (Coopafarc) has 26 members and their families, a total of 50 people. Production is under order.
The idea for this project arose at the Roraima state Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae). For the last two years, the Sebrae has been operating in the sector promoting courses and discussion with banana farmers. As the fruit has always been in great offer, the prices charged were very low. The increase in the use of bananas should help keep prices up. This information is by the Sebrae news agency.
