São Paulo – An increase in demand for air transportation within Brazil increased 3.8% in H1 2015 in comparison to the same period of last year, according to data released this Thursday (23rd) by the Brazilian Airlines Association (Abear), which gathers data from airlines TAM, Gol, Azul and Avianca. In the same period, supply was expanded in 2.8%. The total of passengers carried added up to 47.1 million, an increase of 3.3%.
According to Abear, in H1 the demand for international flights increased 13.1%, with supply expanding 13.6%. The total of passengers that travelled abroad stood at 3.5 million, 15.1% more than the same period of last year.
The data also shows that, in June, domestic demand increased 1.7% over the same month of last year. Supply increased 2.5% and 7.6 million passengers were carried, 6% more than in June of 2014. According to Abear, the numbers are linked to the school vacation period. In turn, international demand increased 11.6%, with supply going up 12.3%. In total, 560,000 passengers were carried, 13.6% more than in June 2014.
According to Abear’s president, Eduardo Sanovicz, the estimation for 2015 is that the sector won’t see the same growth registered last year, with a trend to stabilize in a lower level. “We still aren’t able to talk about numbers because each airline’s reaction to the current environment is an individual one, because they each have an independent and distinct business model”.
