Rio de Janeiro – Industrial production has increased in seven out of 14 states surveyed by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) from July to August this year, even though the country’s overall production remained level during the period. The highest increases in production took place in Paraná (3.6%), Goiás (1.7%) and Santa Catarina (1.6%).
Output also increased in the states of Ceará (1%), São Paulo (0.6%), Minas Gerais (0.3%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.2%).
Of the seven states where output was down, Bahia saw the sharpest decline (-8.6%), due to the power outage in August in the Brazilian Northeast. Output was down 2.2% in the Northeast as a whole. Industrial output was also down in the states of Rio de Janeiro (-4.2%), Pará (-1.6%), Espírito Santo (-1.4%), Pernambuco (-0.8%) and Amazonas (-0.7%).
August-on-August, output was down in nine out of 14 states, highlighting Espírito Santo (-5.9%), Minas Gerais (-4.5%), Rio de Janeiro (-3.9%), São Paulo (-3.4%) and Amazonas (-3.2%); in all of these, the rate of decline was higher than the national average of 1.2%.
Year-to-date, 11 of the 14 states saw increases in production; in the last 12 month period ended August, output was up in eight out of 14 states.
