Rio de Janeiro – Brazilian industrial production grew 0.9% in October as against September, interrupting a series of negative results. With regard to October last year, the sector presented expansion of 2.3%, the first growth after 13 months back to back of negative rates in this comparison.
The figures are included in the Industrial Monthly Research, disclosed on Tuesday (4) by the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE). With the results for October, national industrial production accumulates a drop of 2.9% in ten months of this year. According to the IBGE, the rate is lower when compared to that observed in previous months.
Over the last 12 months, sector production dropped 2.7%. The negative result is more intense than that verified in August (-2.9%) and September (-3.1%).
According to the IBGE, the 0.9% growth in October, as against the same month last year, reflects the good performance of 13 of 27 sectors investigated, being the main contributions from the extraction industry (8.6%), machinery and equipment (6.3%) and vehicles (3.7%). Among those that dropped in production are the pharmaceutical industry (-5.2%), oil refining and alcohol production (-2.6%) and editing, printing and reproduction of prints (-3.8%).
The 2.3% expansion, in comparison with October 2011 is, according to the IBGE, the result of better performance in 21 of the 27 sectors researched. The highlights were transport equipment (16.2%), production of aircraft, machinery and equipment (5.2%); medical and hospital, optical and other equipment (29.8%); and food (2.6%).
