São Paulo – Ongoing conflicts in have left nearly 2 million children with schools, and another 1.2 million students aged 5 to 14 are at risk of quitting. According to the representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) in Baghdad, Peter Hawkins, violence is affecting the school calendar and may cost the Arab country “an entire generation.”
Unicef said this Friday (30th) that over 5,300 schools cannot be used because they have been destroyed, damaged, or converted into shelter for displaced families. Roughly 1 million children are displaced, and 70% of them have lost an entire year of school.
Last year, 40 schools were built and 141 prefabricated classrooms were installed across the country to allow 220,000 children to keep going to school.
