São Paulo – Fencer Nathalie Moellhausen clinched the gold medal at the Épee Grand Prix in Doha, Qatar. The Italian Brazilian won the six matches she played Sunday (29), including the final bout against Marie-Florence Candassamy of France.
The 2019 individual world champion showed on Friday (27) that she would fight for medals in Doha by winning the five matches of the preliminary phase – in which athletes are divided into groups and duel against each other – and making it to main bracket of the tournament, which brought together 27 of the 28 best fencers in the International Fencing Federation (FIE) ranking. The Italian Brazilian started the competition as the 36th on the list.
In the final bout of women’s individual épee, Moellhausen faced France’s Marie-Florence Candassamy, winning with a 15-8 score.
Brazil was represented in the male bracket of the Doha Grand Prix by Leandro Seini and Alexandre Camargo. The first was out in the preliminary phase, while the latter, leader of the national ranking, got a bye into the round 64, eliminated by US’s Stephen Ewart 15-14. If he had won, Camargo would have made it to the main bracket.
