São Paulo – On July 28th, São Paulo’s Jockey Club will is hosting a special Arabian horse race: Fa El Shawan/Haras Lone Star. The race is sponsored by the Brazilian Arabian Horse Breeders Association (ABCCA).
The race is special because it will feature only animals whose racing careers are beginning. There will be no betting, but the first and second places will share a R$ 10,000 (US$ 4,500) prize.
“We are counting on Arabian horse enthusiasts for another thrilling race next Monday, when we will have stallions and mares that never won a race, going after their first victory,” said ABCCA Racing director Paulo Jamil Saliba, according to a press release from the association.
The executive claims breeders must be aware that races are important to the breed’s selection process. “With support from the breeders, a new, solid market is poised to emerge for new horses, broadening the range of sales opportunities for these animals, which are athletes as early as two years of age: thoroughbred Arabian horses begin their career when they are three years old,” said Saliba.
The director added that apart from being beautiful, the animals must be functional and healthy. “We are not looking to make the Arabian horse into a purely race horse, but rather to have this be the first stage in the life of this well-rounded animal,” he said in the press release.
