El Quweira – Jordan’s prime minister, Hani Al Mulki, opened this Thursday (26) the Quweira solar power plant, the largest photovoltaic plant in the country, in the namesake district in the province of Aqaba, in the south of Jordan. The information is from the Jordanian news outlet Petra.
The venture was funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), from the United Arab Emirates. According to Petra, the project cost USD 120 million, but the Emirates News Agency (WAM) estimates it in AED 550 million, around USD 150 million.
The plant, with a capacity of 103 megawatts, will supply power to 50,000 households. In all, 328,320 photovoltaic panels were installed and around 1,000 jobs were created during construction, according to WAM. Jordan has set a goal of reaching 2020 with 20% of its power grid supplied by renewable sources.
