São Paulo – The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad) announced this Thursday (16th) that it will have a new secretary general Kenya’s Mukhisa Kituyi. He was appointed by the UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, for a four-year term starting on September 1st.
According to the Unctad, Kituyi is a former Member of Parliament and minister of Commerce in Kenya. He will replace Thailand’s Supachai Panitchpakdi, who was in charge of the Unctad for two consecutive terms since September 2005, and will leave post on August 31st. Prior to that, Panitchpakdi was the director general of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
According to the Unctad, the appointment is pending approval from the UN’s General Assembly.
