São Paulo – Kuwait’s government decided to ease by two hours the curfew implemented in the country to fight the novel coronavirus. The curfew moved from 6pm-6am to 7pm-5am as of Sunday (21), news agency Gulf News reported.
The step is part of a slew of measures to ease social distancing and gradually restore the country’s economic and social activities. But the Kuwaiti government decided to extend working with the first phase of the plan, government spokesperson Tareq Al Merzem said during a virtual conference. The public sector employees would be allowed to return to work from offices next week as previously announced but will stay home for another week.
On the other hand, the government will lift the lockdown in cities and areas such as Hawally, Nuqra, Maiden and some blocks in Khaitan. The spokesperson added that air travel will be allowed for citizens with critical health conditions and students who must travel to attend their exams abroad.
The spokesperson said the Ministry of Health will keep assessing the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic. In late May, the Kuwaiti government announced a five-phase plan to gradually return to normalcy, replacing the nationwide full curfew, which lasted until May 30, with a 12-hour partial curfew.
Kuwait had 38,678 confirmed coronavirus cases and 313 deaths until Friday (19). On Friday alone, 604 more infections were reported by the Ministry of Health.
