São Paulo – Latin America and the Caribbean will prepare themselves for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20, starting next Wednesday (7th) in Santiago, Chile. The Rio+20 conference, which will discuss major environment and sustainability issues worldwide, is due June next year in Rio de Janeiro.
The preparatory meeting for Latin America and the Caribbean will continue until next Friday (9th) at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Eclac). The meeting aims to orchestrate the positions of countries in the region for the world conference.
A plenary session will be held with Eclac member countries, representatives of international organizations and of the civil society. Afterwards, the progress and shortcomings of the region will be assessed in meeting sustainable development goals.
A document will be presented that was crafted by 19 different UN organizations, agencies and programmes, coordinated by the Eclac, which diagnoses the regional situation and puts forth proposals for sustainable development. By the end of the meeting, the declaration of Latin American and Caribbean countries for the Rio+20 conference is expected to receive approval.
