São Paulo – Guimarães & Vieira de Mello Advogados, a law firm from Brazil, has signed an international partnership that should allow it to work together with lawyers from the United States, Frankfurt, Shanghai, Caracas, Bogota and Dubai. The Brazilian office established agreements with North American office Diaz Reus Attorneys, which has offices in all of these cities. The partner and one of the founders of Guimarães & Vieira de Mello Advogados, Marcello Vieira de Mello, said that the partnership should work with the Diaz head office and also with the branches.
The office in Brazil assists large companies that normally have international demands. Among them is the analysis of import and export contracts, court cases for the case of non-compliancy of contracts, the opening of installations or branches in other countries. "If the company has demand in the United States, for example, it is uncomfortable to have to find an unknown office there. Our idea is to offer clients who already know us and trust our work an office with the same technical quality and responsibility we have," said Mello.
Guimarães & Vieira de Mello Advogados also operates in the search for investors for Brazilian companies, both to buy whole companies, shares and participation in projects. And Mello believes that this should be one of the greatest demands in the joint work developed with the Diaz Reus Attorneys branch in Dubai. According to Mello, the office in the Emirates is already seeking investors for a company in the Brazilian agro industrial sector, for example. Also in China and Dubai, Diaz is seeking investors to explore oil in marginal fields with a Brazilian company.
In February, the managing partner at Diaz Reus Attorneys, Michael Diaz Jr., even participated in a meeting in Dubai focussing on investment in Latin America. At the event, called the Latin Finance Conference – The Latin-American Mid-East Investors Forum, Diaz spoke about the legal risks for investors from Dubai to do business in Latin America. He also spoke about the partnership with the Brazilian office. The meeting was organized by company LatinFinance. The idea is for Diaz to administer the projects in countries in which it has offices, but to count on the support of the Brazilian law firm.
The main areas of Diaz Reus Attorneys and Guimarães & Vieira de Mello Advogados operations are partnership law and business law. The Brazilian office is one of the largest in the state of Minas Gerais in terms of partnership and business law and also has great operation in the area of bankruptcy, mergers and acquisitions as well as tax, labour, international and administrative law. Apart from the office, in Belo Horizonte, the office has units in Florianópolis, the capital of the state of Santa Catarina, and Uberlândia, also in Minas Gerais. Among the organisation’s clients are Banco Mercantil do Brasil, Construtora Egesa and Cosimat Siderúrgica. The office also has Leonardo Guimarães as a partner.
