São Paulo – Brazilian exports of leather generated US$ 104.4 million in January, growth of 42% over the same month last year. In volume, the growth was 21%, according to figures disclosed by the Confederation of Brazilian Hides and Skins Industries (CICB). The organisation’s forecasts for this year are for shipments of US$ 1.4 billion, which should represent expansion of 27% over 2009.
The main markets for Brazilian leather in January were Italy, with imports of US$ 27.94 million and expansion of 34% over the same month last year, China, with US$ 23.25 million, growth of 55%, the United States, US$ 10.43 million, 130% more, and Hong Kong, with US$ 9.25 million, 12% less.
Among the countries that presented great growth in imports are Poland (229%), Taiwan (159%), Denmark, which grew 11.6 times, and Tunisia, which expanded imports by 48.5 times.
Among the Brazilian states that exported most in January, São Paulo sold US$ 29.27 million, followed by Rio Grande do Sul, with US$ 23 million, and Paraná, with US$ 11 million.
