São Paulo – Brazilian leather exports totalled US$ 1 billion from January to July, representing growth of 74% over the same period last year. The data were disclosed this Monday (9th) by the Confederation of Brazilian Hides and Skins Industries (CICB). The organization forecasts that the year should end with US$ 1.7 billion in exports.
In a statement issued by the organization, the president of the CICB, Wolgang Goerlich, claimed that despite the growth in exports during the period, sales in July dropped by 13.3% as against the previous month. The reduction was a consequence of financial problems faced by international markets, especially the European Union.
In order to increase the Brazilian industry’s foreign market share, the CICB, in partnership with the Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex), has been working to diversify markets and increase the supply of more sophisticated, higher value-added products. Currently, 90 countries import Brazilian leather.
