São Paulo – Brazilian exports of leather reached US$ 1.17 billion from January to August, representing growth of 72% over the same period of last year. In August, sales totalled US$ 154 million. The data were supplied by the Confederation of Brazilian Hides and Skins Industries (CICB).
The president of the organization, Wolfgang Goerlich, said in a press release that export revenues confirms this year’s forecasts, which were of approximately US$ 1.7 billion.
He claimed, however, that several factors are detracting from the competitiveness of the Brazilian industry, such as lower slaughter volumes due to shortage of cattle, declining international market prices and other issues.
In order to promote leather in the foreign market, the CICB, in partnership with the Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex), has been carrying out some actions, by means of the Brazilian Leather program, in order to improve the image of the industry in other countries.
