São Paulo – The 4th Ibero-American Cinema Festival will be held in Beirut from October 31st to December 8th. The public may view movies from Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, Peru, Venezuela, Mexico, El Salvador, Portugal and Spain, to be exhibited at Metropolis Empire Sofil.
From Brazil, production Vendo ou Alugo, by director Betse de Paula, will be shown. The comedy shows the story of a great-grandmother, grandmother, mother and daughter who share a house that they can no longer support, as they are full of debt. The location of the house, close to a slum, makes it hard to sell or rent. When a Police Pacification Unit (UPP) takes over the slum, potential buyers start visiting the house. During one of these visits, a shoot-out begins, and traps everyone in the house.
The Brazilian movie should be exhibited on November 2nd, at 8:00 pm, subtitled in English. The price of each ticket is 5,000 Lebanese pounds, around R$ 7.
Días de Vinilo (Vinyl Days), from Argentina, tells the saga of four friends aged 30: Damián, Marcelo, Luciano and Facundo. Their relations are based on music, friendship and women. An author and screenplay writer, Damián writes a movie script to try to bring back his former girlfriend, Ana, but another woman, Vera, loses his work.
Based on the Gabriel García Márquez novel, O Amor nos Tempos do Cólera (Love in the Time of Cholera) is a movie about the work of a man who waits for fifty years to meet his true love. The Brazilian Fernanda Montenegro is in the cast of the movie, which also includes Javier Bardem.
The other movies in the festival are Mientras duerme (Sleep Tight – Espanha), Florbela (Portugal), Años después (Years Later – México), En la región del hielo (In the Region of Ice ) and El cadáver exquisito (Exquisite Corpse – both from El Salvador), Artigas la Redota (La Redota, The Story of Artigas – Uruguay), Mariposa Negra (Black Butterfly – Peru), El chico que miente (The kid who lies – Venezuela) e Qué pena tu vida (F*ck my life – Chile).
The festival is being organized by Cervantes Institute in Beirut and by the embassies of the countries participating in the event.
