São Paulo – The Libya-based Libyan Airlines and Afriqiyah Airways should add 37 new aircraft to their fleets by the end of 2012. The information was supplied by the Libyan African Aviation Holding Company (Laahco), responsible for aviation in the Arab country, and published by African news agency Panapress.
According to a company executive, the value invested in modernizing the two companies’ fleets is 7 billion Libyan dinars, equivalent to US$ 5.4 billion at current exchange rates. It is the highest figure ever invested in aircraft by the country.
According to Panapress, Libyan Airlines should receive a series of modern pieces of equipment over the next three months. The same source informed that Libyan Airlines has ordered five Airbus 330s and five Airbus 350s, among others.
The new aircraft should fly domestic routes in Libya as well as international ones. The country has 137 airports and a population of 6.3 million. The per capita Gross Domestic Capital (GDP) is US$ 13,400 and 53% of the citizens work in the services sector.
