São Paulo – Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva published a statement on Wednesday (11) calling for the protection of Israeli and Palestinian children. The president addresses it to United Nations (U.N.) Secretary-General António Guterres and the international community.
“I want to appeal to U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres and the international community for us to – together and urgently – use all available means to end the gravest violation of human rights in the conflict in the Middle East,” Lula said. He said there’s a urgent need for an international humanitarian intervention and a ceasefire to protect the children. Pictured, a child boy next to the ruins of a building in Gaza City.
Lula asks for the liberation of Israeli children and that Palestinian children and their mothers are allowed to leave the Gaza Strip via its border with Egypt. “We need to have a shred of humanity amidst the insanity of war,” he says. He reaffirms Brazil’s efforts as the rotating president of U.N. Security Council for the immediate and final end of the conflict and said his country will continue working for peace and in defense of human rights.
The federal government via its diplomacy has worked in rescuing Brazilians from the conflict zone. A first plane with 211 passengers has arrived in Brazil from Tel Aviv. Other five flights are expected to arrive by Sunday (15), Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported. Two Brazilians, Bruna Valeanu and Ranani Nidejelski Glazer, died in the attacks.
The Foreign Ministry added that the Embassy in Tel Aviv keeps receiving information from Brazilians interested in returning to Brazil and that Brazil’s Representative Office in Ramallah keeps in contact with the Brazilians in the Gaza Strip. Brazil’s diplomacy has worked for the departure of Brazilians from Gaza Strip via its border with Egypt.
