Geneva – President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva declared that the matter of Central Bank independence is not under consideration, saying that the question is not an important element in Brazilian monetary policy at the moment.
"I have never had a businessman ask about Central Bank independence," said Lula, when journalists asked him if Central Bank independence was needed for monetary policy to be successful.
"Central Bank independence is not something I am worried about. If the public and the Congress want to talk about it, fine. It is something else we will have to talk about," said the president. "What I want is a Central Bank that is serious, defends the currency and keeps monetary policy steady without abrupt ups and downs. And that is something we already have."
