São Paulo – Global passenger traffic has grown 6% in January when compared to the same month last year, according to information disclosed today (5) by Airports Council International (ACI), the organisation that brings together airport operators.
In international flights, the region with the greatest growth in movement was the Middle East, with 15%, followed by Africa (13%) and Asia-Pacific (11%). In the Middle East, according to the ACI, the airports that had the greatest expansion in passenger movement were Dubai (17%) and Abu Dhabi (11%), both in the United Arab Emirates, and Tel Aviv, in Israel (21%).
In Africa, several airports in Arab cities have been registering double digit advances in turnover, among them Cairo, Hurgada and Sharm El Sheikh, in Egypt, Casablanca, Fez, Marrakesh and Oujda, in Morocco, and Monastir, in Tunisia.
Regarding domestic flights, Latin America led the growth with 11% expansion in traffic in January. The passenger turnover was largest in the airports of São Paulo (22%) and Brasília (15%), both in Brazil and Buenos Aires, in Argentina (12%).
Regarding cargo throughput, the expansion was 25% in January over the same month in 2009. The Asia-Pacific region and the Middle East presented the greatest growth, with 43% and 29%, respectively.
