São Paulo – The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, spoke this Wednesday (25) with the emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, about the conflict in the Gaza Strip. According to a press release by the Brazilian President’s Office, they discussed the importance of opening a humanitarian corridor and freeing the hostages, and the need for a ceasefire and avoiding the escalation of the conflict.
According to the release, Lula highlighted the critical role played by Qatar in attempts to mediate the conflict between Israel and Hamas. According to the President’s Office, Brazil and Qatar want a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine to live together peacefully. Lula also expressed his concern to the emir about the situation of the Brazilians still in the Gaza Strip waiting for repatriation.
The Brazilian president has had a series of contacts with other leaders in recent days intending to promote a solution to restore peace, including the Arabs Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), Abdel Fattah el-Sissi of Egypt, and Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates. Brazil is also working towards a peaceful outcome in Gaza at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
