Brasília – Brazil’s Central Government (National Treasury, Social Security and Central Bank) registered the widest primary deficit on record last July, at BRL 20.152 billion, up from a BRL 19.227 billion deficit in July 2016. The numbers were made public by the National Treasury this Tuesday (29).
A primary deficit means government expenditure exceeded revenue, with debt interest payments not factored in. Year-to-date through July, the deficit came out to BRL 76.277 billion, also the widest ever and up from BR$L 55.693 billion through July 2016.
