Rabat – Relevant opportunities are available in Morocco to Mercosur countries due to the former’s economic development and strategic location as a gateway to Africa, Maghreb Arabe Presse (MAP) quoted secretary of State to Morocco’s Ministry of Industry, Investment, Trade and Digital Economy Rkia Derham as saying this Tuesday (16).
The Ministry’s Foreign Trade secretary (pictured above on the right) met with Mercosur Parliament (Parlasur) president, Paraguay’s Tomás Bittar Navarro (left), who’s in Morocco at this time. The Arab country and the South American bloc are in talks for a free trade agreement. MAP quoted Derham as saying Morocco is committed to building a fresh economic partnership with the group comprising Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Venezuela is temporarily suspended from the Mercosur, and Bolivia is in the process of joining.
Derham went on to say that Morocco is looking to diversify its partnerships in trade, and that the Mercosur allows access to several South American countries. The bloc sustains association agreements with Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, the Guyana, Peru and Suriname.
“It’s only a matter of time until we reach an equitable, generous Morocco-Mercosur agreement,” Navarro said according to MAP. Morocco’s Chamber of Representatives and the Parlasur entered into a memorandum of understanding on Monday (15) to enhance mutual cooperation. Parlasur is based in Montevideo, Uruguay.
