São Paulo – Brazil’s National Library Foundation is enrolling foreign publishing houses interested in promoting books by Brazilian authors abroad. The call to participate in the project was published in August by the institution that is connected to the Ministry of Culture. The Library should offer financial support to participation of authors from Brazil in literary events in other countries by the end of 2013. Enrolment may take place up to November 16th of this year through the Exchange Programme for Brazilian Authors.
To participate, the publishing house must have published a work by a Brazilian author or have acquired the publishing rights. The Authors must also have had at least one literature and humanities work published in Brazil. Those selected will receive support of US$ 3,000 and the funds may be used to cover travel costs, hospitality and other costs related to the presence of the writer in the literary event. The Library should turn a total of R$ 70 mil (US$ 34 600) to this programme in 2012, according to the call.
Registration may be done by internet, with the sending of some information like the itinerary in the country, the agenda of forecasted events, the enrolment form, the author’s statement of knowledge about the order, the contract with right for publication between the writer and the publishing house, as well as the author’s biography. The originals of this document should be scanned for emailing and should also be sent by mail to the National Library Foundation.
Selection will be in the hands of two of the institution’s representatives, representatives of the Ministry of Culture or connected institution, and two foreign consultants in the literary area. Facts to be taken into consideration in the choice will be the contribution of the activity to be developed and its relevance to promotion of the author at literary events and to the spreading of Brazilian literature and culture, as well as the consistency and capacity for execution of the agenda proposed by the publishing house. After the event, there should be reports on the activities.
