Brasília – A new version of the Brazilian passport has been launched this Friday (10th). Changes include the document’s validity, which has increased from five to 10 years. According to Brazil’s minister of Justice, José Eduardo Cardozo, the new passport will align Brazil with the standards adopted by other countries. “Brazil is aligning itself with international standards in this issue. We were seeing a big accumulation of passport issuance and renewal applications and there was no sense in keeping up a tradition that is not followed around the world,” the minister said.
Apart from the change in validity, security features have been improved. A new digital signature cryptography standard was adopted to make the data stored in the chip more secure. In addition to a new layout, the cover features an invisible, fluorescent image. According to the minister, the old passports will remain valid until their expiration dates.
