São Paulo – The next sugarcane crop (2008/2009) should be the largest in the history of Brazil, totalling 498.1 million tonnes harvested. The estimate was disclosed today (17th) by the São Paulo Sugarcane Agroindustry Union (Unica).
According to projections by the organisation, the crop that initiated this month is going to be 16% greater than the previous one, in which 431.2 million tonnes of cane were harvested.
For the next crop, sugar production should be 9% higher than the result obtained last year and, according to estimates by Unica, should total 28.6 million tonnes of the product.
The organisation also forecasts that alcohol production should grow 19%, totalling 24.3 litres. Of that total, 7.6 billion should be anhydrous alcohol, and 16.6 billion, hydrated alcohol.
