São Paulo – Applications are open for Programa Estudantes-Convênio de Pós-Graduação – PEC-PG, a Brazilian postgraduate scholarship program. Up to 100 master’s and doctoral candidates from developing countries will be accepted. Students from 59 different countries are eligible, including the Arab countries of Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon and Syria. Entries will be accepted until November 25.
Prior to applying, candidates must have been accepted by a public or private teaching institution in Brazil, for master’s or doctoral programs graded three or higher by Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (Capes), the postgraduate arm of the Brazilian Ministry of Education. A list of Capes-recommended courses is available at http://migre.me/vebJE (in Portuguese).
Monthly allowances to non-native students will be the same as those paid to nationals. Master’s students are offered BRL 1,500 (USD 470.66) a month for up to 24 months. Doctoral candidates get BRL 2,200 (USD 690.30) for up to 48 months. Students must meet the cost of travel coming into Brazil, but the return airfare is covered by the program.
Candidates are required to have a Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese Language (Celpe-Bras), including those from Portuguese-speaking countries. Lebanon is the only eligible Arab country where the Celpe-Bras is applied, in Beirut’s Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Center. Residents from other nearby countries can take the exam there.
Documentation such as diplomas and student records are accepted in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. Results will be announced by December 31 and classes are slated to start in February 2017.
