Paris – In the 35 member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) plus Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Saudi Arabia and South Africa, some 15% of young people, or roughly 40 million, are not currently working, studying or in training, and over two thirds of these youths are not actively seeking employment, as per the 8th issue of survey Society at a Glance released this Wednesday (5).
It concludes that the Great Recession led to a staggering number of jobs being lost, chiefly among young people, and that the recovery has failed to bring jobs back, particularly among less-skilled workers aged 15 and 29. The report warns that this inactivity among young people can lead to isolation and detachment from society, thereby posing a risk to social cohesion.
