São Paulo – Qatar is the Arab country with the best performance in the Tokyo Olympics, in 25th place, according to the official table, until 8:00 pm UTC this Monday (2). On Sunday (1), Qatari athletes won two gold medals and started the count for the country in the general ranking. The country has no silver or bronze medals so far.
The two first places were also the first Olympic gold medals in the history of the Arab country, which will host the World Cup of the International Football Federation (FIFA) next year and has been encouraging sports. The gold medals came from athletics and weightlifting.
Athlete Fares Ibrahim (pictured above), 23 years old, won the first-ever gold for Qatar, in weightlifting, in the 96 kg category. He managed to lift a total of 402 kg (177 kg snatch and 225kg clean & jerk), a new Olympic record.
The other medal came from Mutaz Barshim in the high jump. He jumped 2,37 meters, the same height as the Italian Gianmarco Tamberi. Instead of breaking a tie, the two preferred to share the first place. The decision had repercussions around the world and was one of the most memorable moments of the Olympics.
The ranking in which Qatar is in 25th place is the official medals table that considers mainly the number of gold medals won by each country. In the total number of medals, including silver and bronze, Qatar appears in the 49th position this Monday.
