São Paulo – Brazilian packaging exports grew by 15.67% in the first half of this year, compared with the same period of 2009. Revenues from the industry’s foreign sales reached US$ 159.5 million, according to information disclosed by the Brazilian Packaging Association (ABRE), based on a survey conducted in partnership with the Brazilian Economics Institute of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV).
There was also an increase in packaging imports from January to June. Purchases of products from abroad grew 56.97% and totalled US$ 320 million. Packaging production in the country increased by 16.29% in the first half of the year as against the same period of 2009. According to the ABRE, industry revenues this year should total US$ 20 billion, representing growth of 10%.
The best performance with regard to production was that of the wood packaging industry, which grew by 24.63%. The second segment in production growth was the metal packaging industry, which had growth of 23.9%, followed by plastic products, which grew by 16.27%. Per sector, the shoes and leather articles, pharmaceutical, beverage, and clothing and accessories industries were the ones for which packaging were produced the most.
